Shia LaBeouf was almost in 'Suicide Squad,' but the studio rejected him

shia squad

Shia LaBeouf sat down with Variety for a revealing new profile that explores the 30-year-old actor's bizarre behavior over the past few years and the comeback he's having with an Oscar-worthy performance in the upcoming movie "American Honey.

Though he says in the story that he's no longer on the wish list for the big Hollywood titles like he was as a kid starring in "Transformers," he did admit that he was almost in "Suicide Squad."

LaBeouf had worked with "Squad" director David Ayer on his previous movie, "Fury." The actor told Variety that Ayer asked him to play the role of Lieutenant GQ Edwards, which eventually went to Scott Eastwood.

But the studio apparently vetoed the casting.

“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

LaBeouf also said that when he was vying for the role, the parts of Edwards and Rick Flag (at one time to be played by Tom Hardy and later played by Joel Kinnaman) were more substantial.

“Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit," LaBeouf said. "That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character got written down to build Will up.”

LaBeouf is currently having something of a return to form after a period of heavy drinking that led to strange behavior that ranged from him causing a drunken disturbance at a Broadway performance of "Cabaret" to plagiarizing the work of cartoonist Daniel Clowes for a short film he directed in 2013. LaBeouf says he hasn't had a drink in a year.

Ben Affleck just revealed the title for his highly anticipated Batman movie

Ben Affleck has given us a critical detail about his upcoming standalone Batman movie: the title.

"The movie I think is going to be called ‘The Batman,’" Affleck told the Associated Press during the press junket for "The Accountant" (opening October 13). "At least that’s what we’re going with right now. I might change it… That’s about all I got right now. We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it.”

Not much is known about "The Batman" project, for which Affleck will return as The Dark Knight after playing the character in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (and providing a cameo for "Suicide Squad"). He is also directing the Batman movie and writing the screenplay.

The only other piece of info that's been revealed about the movie from Warner Bros., which currently has no release date, is that Joe Manganiello ("Magic Mike,""True Blood") will be playing the villain Deathstroke in the movie.

A source told Business Insider that "The Batman" is the working title for the project.

Some people are complaining that Netflix's 'Luke Cage' is racist

marvels luke cage hoodie

Forgetting (or choosing to ignore) that #OscarsSoWhite (as is Hollywood in general), white people are apparently complaining about Netflix's Luke Cage being racist. Marvel's latest show is also its blackest, from its hero and villains to the supporting characters and soundtrack.

For those of you who didn’t help break Netflix after Luke Cage dropped Friday, the show is set in the New York City’s Harlem, a historically black community. Therefore, having a cast of predominantly black and Latino people for the show isn’t outlandish. But apparently it’s racist, according to some Twitter users. One person actually noted the characters are mostly black and asked the tone-deaf question, “Where is the diversity?”

And this person, who later said the tweet was sarcastic.

To answer that user’s question, actual diversity is still an issue in media. A recent study of the top 100 grossing films of 2015 found that almost 74 percent of characters with speaking roles were white. Out of those 100 films, there were only 14 that had a person of color as a star or co-star.

And because most people know there’s a lack of diversity, Twitter users laid down facts and pulled out receipts for anyone calling Luke Cage racist.

And in case you needed it, here's Luke Cage himself deflecting cries of racism.

Luke Cage

Netflix's latest superhero series "Luke Cage" premiered last week to great fanfare and critical acclaim.

The show follows the exploits of Marvel Comic hero Luke Cage — played by veteran actor Mike Colter — as he works as a "superhero for hire" in Harlem, New York City.

The Netflix original series currently boasts a 96% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which beats out previous Marvel Netflix shows "Daredevil" (86%) and "Jessica Jones" (93%). And it has "universal acclaim" over at Metacritic.

Read on to see why critics are calling "Luke Cage" the best superhero series yet:

Many critics praised lead actor Mike Colter's performance as the linchpin of the show.

"'Luke Cage' does an excellent job giving each of its cast members (however long they stick around) distinct personalities and memorable moments that create immediate stakes," Collider wrote. "But none shine as brightly as Colter."

"Colter (perhaps best known, before 'Jessica Jones,' for 'The Good Wife') not only oozes charisma but manages to look like a superhero just walking around in a sweatshirt, or even (in rare moments) a jacket and tie," CNN said.

"Marvel's Luke Cage" opened well for Netflix, but not well enough to have caused a weekend outage on the streaming platform.

"Luke Cage" executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker would love to claim Saturday's Netflix blackout was caused by "Luke Cage" bingers, but that's highly unlikely as there are four other shows that rate higher than "Luke Cage" and didn't crash the service.

In its premiere date, September 30, and the five days after, "Luke Cage" has been watched by an estimated 3.52 million adults under the age of 50, according to SymphonyAM, whose app listens to sounds from users' televisions and takes that data to extrapolate viewership.

Those numbers place the newest Marvel show in fifth place after Netflix's original series "Fuller House," the fourth season of "Orange Is the New Black," season two of "Marvel's Daredevil," and "Stranger Things," based on their respective premiere dates and following five-day viewership.

Among Netflix's Marvel series, "Luke Cage" does beat "Jessica Jones," which is in eighth place.

The next Marvel series for Netflix, "Marvel's Iron Fist," premieres March 17, 2017.

Here are the top 20 Netflix original programs, according to SymphonyAM:

Superman teams up with Supergirl for the first time in CW preview clip

superman debuts on supergirl the cw

Superman makes his debut on The CW's "Supergirl" on Monday night at 8 p.m., but the network just released a preview clip of the cousins' reunion hours early.

So far on "Supergirl," we've only seen Superman in profile, with his face hidden.

We've known for several months now that MTV's "Teen Wolf" alum Tyler Hoechlin will be the next lucky actor to suit up as the Man of Steel. But it looks like this version is a lot more comfortable in his skin — both that of Superman and Clark Kent.

"There’s certainly a little bit of the 'aw shucks' about him, but he’s been Superman for a while, so there’s a savviness about him as Superman and as Clark," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Collider. "If he's been Superman for 12 years, that also means that he's been Clark Kent for 12 years. He knows how to interview somebody. He knows how to get a story out of someone."

In the clip, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman respond to the same emergency and quickly realize they'll need to work together.

Not only does Monday serve as the season-two premiere for "Supergirl," it's the first season after CBS decided to cancel the show earlier this year and Viacom sister company, The CW, picked it up.

Original Batman Adam West calls out the 'angst' problem with modern Batman movies

Earlier this year, Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane in the 1978 superman film, revealed her outrage at how Batman v Superman’s iteration of the character was a 'damsel in distress’, wasting Amy Adams’s spectacular talent.

Now, Batman himself, Adam West, has spoken candidly about modern versions of The Caped Crusader, calling for more humour and less angst.

"The new movies, Batman is very full of vengeance and deep-seated angst and so on," West told a roundtable of journalists at New York Comic-Con while promoting the animated movie Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders, via Den of Geek. "They’re very dark."

He added: “Enough violence. Let the costume work for you. And put a little humour into it. I think it’s about time to relieve that all of that kind of attitude of vengeance and 'I can’t take it anymore, I’m going home and I’m going to suck my thumb.'"

The 88-year-old actor will no doubt be relieved to discover that Zack Snyder looks intent on adding more humour to his Justice League film, as demonstrated in a recent behind-the-scenes video.

West portrayed The Dark Knight throughout the 1960s in the Batman TV series and film, substantiating his name in Hollywood and leading to the actor being offered the role of James Bond (something he did not accept).

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck will portray Batman in an upcoming solo film, the title of which has recently been revealed; The Batman.

Miley Cyrus slams 'Supergirl' because of gendering of the character

Miley Cyrus

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miley Cyrus is taking issue with the CW series, "Supergirl," because she says having a show with a gender attached to it is "weird."

The pop singer tells Variety the actress who plays the title character, Melissa Benoist, is a woman, "not a little girl." She also questions "what if you're a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad"

Entertainment Weekly reports "Supergirl" executive producer Andrew Kreisberg responded Tuesday that he stands by the show. He says since it was based on a pre-existing property called "Supergirl," there was never any intention of calling it anything but that.

Kreisberg says they worked hard during the show's first season to address the discrepancy between the title and the character's age.

Cyrus also revealed to Variety that she identifies as pansexual, open to all sexual orientations or gender identities.

Benedict Cumberbatch dressed up as Doctor Strange in public to see what would happen

$

doctor strangeThese days there is no bigger deal in Hollywood than being cast as a comic book superhero. So what's a famous actor to do when they're decked to the nines in an awesome costume? Have lunch of course. That's exactly when Benedict Cumberbatch did while filming scenes from Doctor Strange in New York City. While one might think this was met with either adoring fans or at least a bunch of weird looks, this is New York, and nothing shocks them for too long. Cumberbatch even busted out a movie reference to help visualize the scene.

"I had some friends who were around on Saturday and they were like, 'Wow, oh my god, you're actually playing a superhero!' I said, 'Let's go to a cafe,' and we went to this cafe around the corner. And you know that scene in Ghostbusters where Rick Moranis runs up to the cafe in Central Park, being chased by the Dog of Doom from the building? And he goes, 'Help me, help!' and bangs against the glass? And everyone in the restaurant sort of drops their cutlery and turns their head and looks? And he squeaks down the glass going, 'Please, help me?' And there's a silence? And you cut back to the dining room and everyone goes, 'Anyway, I was saying, Marjorie just had her face done...' That's pretty much what happened in the cafe. By the time I left, it was like, 'Hey, thanks so much, here's a tip!' It was just a normal thing."

You can really see that happening in your mind can't you? The entire cafe stops what it's doing when the guy with the flowing red cape comes into the place. Maybe some of them recognized Benedict Cumberbatch, maybe not. Either way, even in New York, the cape would be an unusual thing to see. However, once they've taken it in, everybody has much more important things to worry about then why this guy is wearing a cape and they all go about their business. Based on his comments toEntertainment Weekly, it would see the actor had a nice lunch. Of course, if Benedict Cumberbatch was being mauled by a demon dog, it would seem the reaction would have been about the same.

As popular as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become, Doctor Strange is not one of the instantly recognizable characters from the canon. If Captain America had walked into the cafe, even before the first film came out, most people would probably know who the guy was. It's entirely possible that here, especially in a cafe where not everybody is necessarily a fan, that nobody really knew wheat they were looking at, which actually makes the whole thing even funnier.

Based on the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't mention being mobbed for autographs we're going to assume that all the patrons just thought the actor was a guy who liked to wear capes.

Why Tom Cruise hasn't made a superhero movie

jack reacher never go back tom cruise

Say what you want about Tom Cruise and his Scientology practice, but he's one of Hollywood's last true movie stars. In an era when hardly anyone is a bankable bet, Cruise's name generally certifies a certain high threshold at the global box office.

So why hasn't the action star dipped his toes into superhero movies, the biggest game running right now at the international box office?

Jimmy Kimmel was curious about it himself, so he asked Cruise about the topic when the actor appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to promote his new Jack Reacher movie "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." Specifically, he wanted to know if Cruise has had any talks with Marvel or DC about a possible role.

It turns out it's been a nonstarter for Cruise.

"No," Cruise told Kimmel. "Look, I really enjoy those films a lot. But I make the 'Missions' and the 'Reachers.' Just different kinds of films."

Indeed, as a star and a producer of both the "Mission: Impossible" and "Jack Reacher" franchises, Cruise has staked his name on slightly more realistic (only slightly) action fare than what he see in the comic-book realm.

And it sounds like Cruise doesn't want to change up his formula any time soon.

Wolverine, aka Logan, is looking a little more human and frail in the trailer for the Marvel character's new movie, "Logan."

Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine/Logan for the third time in the movie, which finds a more aged superhero battling foes with his claws.

The film is set in the future of 2024, with Logan's healing abilities diminshed. Professor X (Patrick Stewart), meanwhile, is suffering from Alzheimer's. Logan has to defeat a company that's destroying the world with the help of a girl, Laura (Sienna Novikov), who's a female clone of Wolverine.

This is Jackman's last go-around as Wolverine before retiring his stint playing the character. The trailer for the bittersweet last adventure is fittingly set to Johnny Cash's powerful cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt."

"Logan" will be out in theaters March 3, 2017.

Dr Strange Jimmy Kimmel ABC YouTube final

There's huge anticipation for Marvel's next movie, "Doctor Strange" (out November 4), but we learned Thursday night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that you shouldn't hire the "Master of the Mystic Arts" to entertain at your kid's birthday party.

Benedict Cumberbatch reprised his role of Dr. Stephen Strange on "Kimmel" for this sketch in which the late-night host holds a party of sugar-high children and Strange finally teleports a half-hour late. Strange thinks he's there to destroy "little demons," only to find the kids running around.

The superhero is ready to bail (though he touts on his LinkedIn page that he's the "mightiest magician in the cosmos") but when Kimmel offers $150 to entertain the kids, Strange has an idea.

Why the 'Deadpool' sequel is suddenly in big trouble

deadpool

On Saturday, "Deadpool" fans were hit with a major body blow when news broke through Deadline that director Tim Miller has left the sequel due to creative differences.

The person who led one of the most unlikely hit movies in recent memory with the first "Deadpool," Miller is obviously leaving big shoes to fill as the film's studio 20th Century Fox seeks to replace him.

According to Deadline, Miller hadn't formerly signed on to do the sequel, which is still in script development, but was planning to return. The movie is slated for release in 2018. It's reported that Miller and Fox left on good terms.

But the drama doesn't sound like it was between Miller and the studio, but rather Miller and his star.

TheWrap reports that Ryan Reynolds, who plays the "Merc with a Mouth," has been given some perks since renegotiating his deal for the sequel, including allegedly having casting approval. Miller and Reynolds, who have not been on speaking terms since the release of "Deadpool," the story indicates, hit a wall in their relationship when Miller wanted to cast "Bloodline" star Kyle Chandler to play character Cable, but Reynolds didn't. The studio went with Reynolds, according to TheWrap.

Tim Miller Ryan Reynolds Kevin Winter GettyFox is now in the difficult position of trying to find a director for one of its biggest films, which is compounded by the fact that Miller had his fingerprints all over the predecessor.

Miller, who is also known for his visual effects work, did much of the original "Deadpool" film's VFX touchups in postproduction for free, according to TheWrap. That gave "Deadpool," which was made for under $60 million (peanuts compared to other superhero movies), a polished look that most projects wouldn't have at that figure.

It's not time to hit the panic button just yet, since "Deadpool" screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are working on the sequel, but now attention shifts even more to Reynolds to make sure "Deadpool 2" succeeds.

Getting the power to have say on creative aspects like casting and tone will lead either to him being hailed if the movie does incredible business, or to the blame being heaped on his shoulders.

"Deadpool" opened in February this year and beat all expectations as it broke numerous box-office records, including the biggest opening for an R-rated movie of all time ($132.4 million). The movie went on to make over $780 million worldwide.

20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

'Doctor Strange' is the trippiest Marvel movie yet — and that's why you need to see it

doctor strange

For the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have been introduced to the sorcery side of the company's comic books, with their release of “Doctor Strange” (in theaters November 4).

It's expected by this point that Marvel knows how to properly tell an origin story about one of its properties, and that holds with "Doctor Strange." Director Scott Derrickson ("Sinister") lays out what transforms egotistical neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange from master of the ER to master of the mystic arts. And Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange is perfect at the conflicted (and sarcastic) state he’s in when he learns that he must find a new path after a horrific car accident robs him of the ability to be a surgeon.

But the visual effects are the real star of "Doctor Strange."

The closest thing to a psychedelic film that family-friendly Disney will allow, it’s filled with dazzling visuals taking us into other dimensions and a kaleidoscope-like view of some of the biggest cities in the world that goes beyond what was done in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” Yes, even die-hard Nolan fans will have reason to see this.

In search of a way to heal his hands after the car accident, Strange travels East in search of alternate medicine. He learns of the Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton, who is amazing as always, despite concerns over whitewashing). After getting a glimpse of what is really beyond the world around us, Strange is hooked and wants to become her disciple.

doctor strange disneyFellow disciple Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) helps train Strange, but before you know it Strange has gobbled up all the information about the mystic arts to become a master. In that time he also learns of the evil Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) and his plans for destruction.

The story is fast and really kicks into gear when Strange takes on Kaecilius, though at times there are pauses in the action to sneak in Strange’s love interest Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), a subplot that's funny but mostly feels forced.

I’m not a huge fan of 3D, but there’s honestly no other movie for which I can recommend the format more. The VFX wizardry that bends and shifts the cities of New York, London, and Hong Kong is really top-notch and makes a movie that otherwise doesn't compel much a joy to watch.

Just don’t sit too close to the screen.

Why the director of 'Deadpool' suddenly left the sequel over 'creative differences'

deadpool

After news recently broke that director Tim Miller has left the sequel to "Deadpool" over "creative differences," we've gotten a little insight into what those differences exactly were.

According to TheWrap, Miller and the franchise's star Ryan Reynolds feuded over the scope of the sequel, which is currently in development with 20th Century Fox.

Miller wanted to go big with a movie that would be three times the budget of the original's $60 million, while Reynolds, along with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, wanted to keep the movie small and stick with its raunchy roots.

Previous reports also indicated that Miller wanted to cast "Bloodline" star Kyle Chandler to play the character Cable in the sequel, but Reynolds didn't.

"Deadpool 2" currently does not have a release date. The original opened in February with the biggest R-rated opening weekend of all time ($132.4 million). The movie went on to make over $780 million worldwide.

Business Insider reached out to Fox for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Disney is having its best box-office year ever and is about to set a new industry record

Thanks to a few surprise performers and its heavy hitters doing as projected, Disney is just days away from breaking the company's box-office record.

The house that Walt built is also looking to set a new industry record by the time 2016 is over.

The studio has earned $5.81 billion in global ticket sales as of November 1, according to Variety, and will likely surpass the $6 billion mark after this weekend's worldwide opening of "Doctor Strange," a Marvel movie.

Disney's previous record-setting year was 2015, with $5.84 billion in worldwide total gross ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens" played a big part in that).

But the industry record was set by Universal last year with $6.89 billion, thanks to hits like "Jurassic World" and "Furious 7."

finding dory trailer poster internationalThis year, it seems everything Disney releases turns to gold. "Zootopia" and "The Jungle Book" did better than anyone expected ("Zootopia" surpassed $1 billion worldwide, "The Jungle Book" is just under that mark). And "Finding Dory" as well as "Captain America: Civil War" were the huge blockbusters everyone thought they would be ("Dory" and "Civil War" are slots one and two, respectively, in the top domestic earners of 2016).

The strength of Disney's Marvel and Pixar properties mask the few disappointments the studio has had so far, such as "Alice Through the Looking Glass" and "The BFG."

But Disney isn't through yet. After "Doctor Strange," it still has coming out this year "Moana" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the first standalone "Star Wars" film.

Earlier this year, Disney became the fastest studio to ever hit the $2 billion domestic mark, $3 billion international, and $5 billion globally in one year.

doctor strange benedict cumberbatch

The trippiest Marvel movie yet, "Doctor Strange" (opening Friday) is visually stunning, and you should make every effort to see it in 3D, on the biggest screen possible, to get its full effect.

The story follows Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who tries to get his old life back after a horrific car accident by seeking out Eastern medicine. Instead, he finds enlightenment in the form of the mystical arts. And gets pretty good at it, too.

With a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a projected $65 million-$70 million opening weekend, the movie looks to be the next big hit for Disney/Marvel.

But if you need more convincing, here are some of the things the top critics love about it:

SEE ALSO: 29 movies you have to see this holiday season

It's really, really cool to just sit and stare at.

The biggest highlight for critics has been the stunning visual work on "Doctor Strange." From Strange pinballing through different dimensions to city buildings folding up "Inception"-style, the movie is a thrill for the eyeballs.

ScreenCrush calls it "easily the studio’s most exciting spectacle to date," referring to Marvel.

You might feel like you're on drugs, if you aren't actually on them.

"'Doctor Strange' is also, notably, much more mature than its predecessors, and the first blockbuster of the modern superhero era ideally viewed on a magic mushroom trip — all the better to process the stunningly trippy and surprisingly spiritual kaleidoscopic jaunts Strange takes into the astral plane, pulling us along into the rabbit hole,"The Daily Beast wrote.

There's a strong origin story, even though you've seen it before.

The smart aleck who's knocked down and becomes humbled while dusting himself off has been done before by Marvel with "Iron Man." But Marvel has the formula down so well for cinematic origin stories that though the plot of "Doctor Strange" is nothing new, it gets the job done.

"True, 'Doctor Strange' is an origin story, and occasionally hemmed in by the genre’s narrative requirements," The Wrap wrote, "but it’s smart enough to bring in great British actors to make the predictable paces and life lessons feel fresh and fascinating."
